Rod's 0-4-4 Tank Page
1.
Another Acquisition for the SPAFRR. Lots of pics, it seems to change character depending on the viewpoint.
This is a Forney type 0-4-0 Loco I have bashed out of an old LGB "OLO" loco, of which only the motor block and part of the body remain.
The original version first appeared as a "budget Forney" but I was never really happy with the result. I set about improving the loco with the intention of it being a quick job. Of course they never are.
I added about an inch and a half to the boiler between the steam dome and the firebox and that made all the difference.
This meant that the wheel base became quite long so I added a couple of upward facing spring plungers to the rear truck to keep things even. This also helps the power pick up on the rear truck as it was too light without the downward pressure from the bunker.
The cab was scratched out of styrene and windows drop down into slides on the inside, so no glue weeps onto the "glass". They can be removed if desired and do not suffer from being pushed in my enthusiastic handling.
Here is a list of the other bits that have been added.
-
Replacement stack. LGB Spare
-
Rear tuck. LGB Spare
-
Rear tuck wheels. Bachmann's Annie pilot truck
-
Cylinders. Bachmann's Annie
-
Connecting Rod and Crosshead. Bachmann's Annie
-
Cow catcher. Bachmann's Annie
-
Cutbars. Bachmann's Annie
-
Head light Original. LGB modded
-
Domes. Pipe caps from Homeworld
Everything else was scratched out of Brass and styrene.
The whistle, bell, safeties, clacks and snifter valves were turned out of a piece of scrap brass rod.
The injectors are the centres from old LGB flat car wheels.
The water feed piping, sand lines air pump lines and drains are bits of old mains wire.
The handrails are 1/16 th brass rod with the sleeving from the mains wire for the joins.
The pump and generator were made with styrene and milliput, which from what I gather is like the US "Squadron putty"
The chassis will negotiate R1 type curves. Since these pictures were done the large Annie steam chests have been removed from the cylinders
